Late season Elk help
« on: September 23, 2013, 02:28:46 PM »
I am wondering if anyone has any advice or direction on where to go for late season in eastern WA.  Any info would help out.  I'm not wanting anyone to give up their top secret spot but I have always gone out for the early season and after striking out on this years early season I managed to be able to free up some time for the late season.

Can you tell us a little more about
Places you hunted in the early season?
Of course, just general info.
Sometimes that can help people know where to direct you.
Type of weapon you are using?

Sorry I didn't get more info I am new to posting things and not use to asking for help.  Since I am operating on short notice I have to swallow my pride.  I hunt archery.  I have hunted this years early season in 113.  I also hunted last year there and it was good hunting.  This year it was so hot they just weren't as active.  Plus for as small of an area I was huntin there was a ton of other hunters.   I am new to huntin the late season but I have geared up for the cold and ready to at least give it a shot.  I have an eastern archery tag and I will be camping in my truck to be more mobile.  I hope that helps some.  Thanks in advance.

I thought about 117 but I was hoping to do something a little closer.  I live on the west side of the mountains.  I was thinking of maybe 328.  I'm a meat hunter so going after a spike or cow is good with me.

I'll be in the Nile unit late archery elk hopefully. GMU 352
Camping in your truck allows you to be very mobile but a lesson I learned two years ago in the Nile late season when it was super cold - short days and long nights are the norm that time of year and even with heat in my canopy, the nights are way too long to just lay there and way too cold out to just sit by the fire. A heated tent or camper is the way to go in my opinion.

I'm not too concerned with the cold weather.  I am completely geared up for it.  I just don't want to drag the big trailer out if I don't know where I am going to park it.  I wish I was able to get out for some scouting first to find a nice spot to part the rig and figure out where the elk might be but it's that whole work interfering with fun thing.  Anyone know if unit 328 is at all a good idea or should I start thinking elsewhere?  My reasoning is I spoke with a gentlemen some years ago who would rifle hunt there and he said he was in to elk all the time.

I have hunted late archery in 328 2 different years, for a total of 2 days....never saw an elk or fresh track....didn't try that hard though either.

Another spot ya might want to check is 3681 (cowichee). Weve been doing the late hunt in there for the last 10-12 years and when the snow flys, the elk hunting can be very good... Its atleast worth a look. Kenny

328 had 159 harvested last year, that's not bad. I don't know anything about the unit, just looked up the harvest report.  113 in comparison was relatively low with only 61 taken.  Though I'm not sure about how many hunters hunted each, and therefore the success rates, it would stand to reason that the unit is worth checking out. And researching a bit. Also, try searching the unit number and name here on hunt-wa. That had yeilded some great information for me before. Good luck!

stickflngr, I will check that area out.  Is there a lot of public land?

Dbax, I looked at the harvest reports also.  113 does have a low harvest report.  I have learned though to not always count on them.  But your right its a good place to start.

I'm kinda in the same boat myself. Couldn't get enough time away for early archery and didn't stick anything. I hunted the rimrock and did find quite a few animals in the few days I was there, but late season is another beast. I haven't hunted there late, so don't really know what to expect except for snow.
